ABOUT THE WORK
Between Dot and Dot(1989, KR) is a work reflecting Dawoon philosophical meaning of Dot.
This work is part of the ‘DOT’ series project.
Here, Dawoon Kim explains, via analog photographs, her meaning behind the relationship(=cloud) that connects a Dot to a Dot.
For Dawoon a ‘DOT’ is the element that distinguishes the end and the beginning.
Like in a book, a sentence start and finish after a dot.
The sentence within the two dots could be everything, an explanation, a description of a feeling or a subsequent series of words that could have a meaning only for the creator.
The sentence or relationship `(cloud) between two dots, could have infinite possibilities.
The ‘DOT’ is a personification of ‘self'. This could be me as and author, you as watcher or any person walking around the street of Amsterdam.
The "cloud", is Dawoon definition of 'relationship'. A cloud in the physical world is an accumulation of droplets (or dots) having relationships with each other.
Using the combination of these two key medium, the two dots and the cloud (relationship), Dawoon explains how she perceive the world around her.
In her artwork, using analog photos and graphical composition she create a unique and abstract concept of how relationship are perceived.
This could be between two objects, like the relation we have with a photo or with the person we care about.
The photos captured with her analog camera represent moments in which Dawoon experience the sense of relationship and connection.
Especially analog negative films are composed by numerous grains (dots) which close together create an imagine or a concept.
Dawoon tries to discover the easthetic form within these dots by zooming in.
"The “dot” has the intact property of becoming dots, regardless of whether they gather or scatter.
Here the “dot” can be the "self" living the infinite potential relationships(clouds) in this life. This relation or connection could be long or short like a sentence. " Dawoon Kim
ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Born in South Korea in 1989, Dawoon Kim started her career as a graphic designer in 2010 at an installation artist's gallery & studio.
To deepen her personal work, she studied crossmedia design, Aki, in the Netherlands.
Inspired by ‘Dot’, she experiments with various mediums based on graphic visuals.
Since 2020, she has been experimenting with various media such as philosophy, visual, motion, and photography, steadily creating works about ‘Dot’. In 2023, she printed a small collection of works titled ‘Between Dot and Dot’.
